RULES FOR RANCH SORTING  – ATOKAD PARK

  • Two person teams.
  • Entries limited to 5 rides per person – must change partners.
    • It is the responsibility of contestants to know how many times they are entered. If any contestant enters more than five times, all teams that contestant has ridden with will be disqualified and will forfeit all entry money and winnings. Teams that the contestant has not yet ridden with will be allowed to change the disqualified partner.
    • If the same team sorts more than once in any go they will be disqualified and forfeit all entry fees and winnings.
  • The draw will be posted 30 minutes before sorting begins.
    • Teams will be called to the arena in groups of 8-10.
    • The announcer will call the team up, the team on deck, and the team in the hole.
    • If a team is not present after the second call they will be disqualified and no refund will be given.
  • Cattle will be sorted from Pen 1 into Pen 2, then from Pen 2 into Pen 1 consecutively.
  • 90 second time limit.
  • Time starts when the nose of the first horse crosses the starting line and ends when the last calf’s head clears the line.
    • Cattle may overlap when crossing the line as long as they clearly cross in order. This is the decision of the judge and will be final.
    • If any part of a calf’s body re-crosses the line a no time will be called.
    • Any part of any unmarked or out of sequence calf crossing the line will result in a no time.
  • The starting number will be announced when the first horse crosses the starting line, and will be repeated once.
  • The herd will consist of 11 cattle, 10 numbered 0-9 and 1 unmarked.
  • The first three cattle sorted will be timed and recorded to eliminate ties.
  • Time and head count may be called before the 90 second limit if both riders cross the line and call for time.
  •  Any calf that becomes injured, as determined by the staff, will be replaced.
    • Runs with that group of cattle will continue.
    • Previous runs with that group of cattle will remain as recorded.
  • If a calf becomes injured or goes down during a run the contestants in the pen may call for time with the following options:
    • Contestants may restart their run.
    • Or contestants may continue their run from the recorded time and with already sorted cattle in the adjacent pen.
  • Upon completion of their run contestants are asked to settle the herd at the rear and center of the pen they’ve been sorted into.
  • Abuse of any animal including intentional roughing of cattle or your horse, and/or the use of foul language during the competition will not be tolerated and will result in disqualification.
  • Approximately 30% of teams will return for the short go.
    • Time and head count from the short go will be combined with that team’s time and head count from the first go to determine final placing. (Headcount primary – time secondary)
  • Payout will be for the top 15 places.
